general MedSurg patients Familiarity with post-operative care,
including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy
Description: This unit serves a diverse patient population,
including general MedSurg patients, post-operative patients, and
oncology patients with complications. Common diagnoses include
neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, and infections. Permanent staff
administer chemotherapy. Nurses frequently work with chest tubes,
including experience with PleurX chest tubes, which is highly
beneficial. Occasional psych patients may require one-on-one care
with a sitter. Registered Nurses do titrate Heparin drips but do
not manage cardiac drips. Telemetry monitoring is available, and
nurses are required to read and interpret their own strips. A
charge nurse is present 24/7; days do not take patient assignments,
while nights may have patient assignments. The unit employs
Certified Nurse Aides, with a set ratio of aides to nurses to
assist with patient care. Respiratory therapy is available for
managing CPAP and BiPap; nurses administer prescribed respiratory
treatments. The unit operates on a 12-hour shift schedule, with
every other weekend required. Holidays are integrated into the
staff rotation schedule. Floating to other departments is possible,
although travelers may be prioritized for such assignments. Nurses
are required to wear royal blue scrubs. This unit operates in a
fast-paced, acute care environment that values teamwork and support
